On August 19, Tai Art Center proudly launched "X Perception", a residency exhibition featuring works by Dao Anheng, Liang Chi, Li Xiaozhijian, and Zhang Zhen. Curated by Shirley Yin, the Artistic Director of Tai Art Center, the exhibition presents a series of pieces created by these four artists during their residency. The show will run until September 24.
Exhibition & Creation
On the opening day,the opening ceremony drew enthusiastic attention from people across various fields and friends from the art industry. This exhibition showcases a cross-disciplinary collision within contemporary art, aiming to explore the fascinating integration of art with technology, the present with the future. The resident artists, coming from diverse backgrounds, presented their unique reflections on time, emotion, perception, and technology through various forms such as painting, installation art, technology, video, and digital media.
Different themed works were displayed across distinct areas of the exhibition. Artists and visitors engaged in active exchanges on-site, sharing their thoughts and creative inspirations. These discussions delved deeply into the feelings behind creation, future developments, and fresh perspectives.
For this residency exhibition, Dao Anheng presents a series of works divided into four parts: Spring Returns, Nostalgia, Traditional Paper-Making Series, and Performance and Poetry.
Among these, Spring Returns stands out as a short narrative film that he wrote and directed, featuring several resident artists from the Art Flow Art District. The film seeks to portray the twists and turns of an ordinary family’s fate amid changing times through the coming-of-age story of a young girl.
Liang Chi's mechanical-themed works evoke a sense of futuristic technology. However, what does this projection of the future truly signify? Do the current trends of machines becoming more biological and life becoming increasingly engineered validate ancient metaphors we are reluctant to confront? As Kevin Kelly describes, humanity has turned to nature for inspiration, learning from its fundamental mechanisms. Over time, these mechanisms evolve, absorbing human biological logic, while humans, in turn, improve these mechanisms to save time. This cyclical process might explain why machines become biologized and biology engineered—a thought-provoking paradox.
One of his standout works, "New Breed", takes its title from the 2020 album by Detroit musician Matthew Dear. The album features digitally simulated soundscapes developed in collaboration with Ford Motor Company to create AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) sounds. This piece explores the connections between auditory signals, visual images, and geometric forms, examining how our cognition and experiences shape the way we perceive sound and imagery. The series comprises three main components: a three-screen video installation, carbon fiber and 3D-printed sculptures, and a set of engraved brass plates.
Liang Chi remarked: "The support from the Art Flow Art District and Tai Art Center has been invaluable for this creation. Additionally, Jiading District, as an automotive hub, provides extensive car-related resources and manufacturers, offering more opportunities for my research, collaborations, and artistic exploration."
Li Xiaozhijian’s expansive and dynamic paintings transform his works into a natural linguistic paradigm. During his residency, one monumental piece compelled the artist to physically engage with the painting, immersing himself in its space and brushstrokes. This physical and emotional interaction allowed both the artist and viewers to experience the intangible rhythm and profound emotional resonance behind the work.
To the left of the exhibition hall, Profound Valley Contemplation" and "Pine Wandering Amidst Cliffs" , along with the four-panel work "Hidden Dragon in Auspicious Mountains" represent earlier works from the "Mist Valley in Dawn Mountains" series. This subseries primarily explores the spiritual imagery and essence of "valleys." In contrast, the "Vast Rivers, Sacred Peaks and Abyssal Depths" series focuses on the "abyss" as a spiritual and visual motif, differentiating it from the earlier works while maintaining thematic continuity. Li's earlier works inherit a “calligraphic essence,” emphasizing his belief in the creative spatial potential of pigment application. Through experimentation, Li expanded from smaller experimental pieces to medium- and large-scale compositions, building a visual language that bridges tradition and innovation.
Zhang Zhen is an artist known for seamlessly integrating art, technology, new media, and stage design. His works consistently explore experimental theater and futuristic landscapes, employing a "medium-specific linkage" approach to create series that investigate interdisciplinary collaborations and cross-domain creativity.
In this exhibition, his pieces delve into themes of future communities, state archaeology, and control-scape environments, emphasizing audience immersion and interactivity. Audience responses naturally extend the boundaries of the artwork, making their sensory feedback an integral part of the experience.
One highlight is "Future Fields: Circular Aria of an Ecological Community", part of his ongoing "Future Fields" series, which Zhang began in 2020. This series investigates the coexistence of futuristic themes and technological art. Previously, it explored the concepts of post-nature and future time; this time, the focus shifts to urban and community renewal within speculative futures. By incorporating Shanghai’s local context and the unique environment of the Art Flow Art District, Zhang crafts a multidimensional ecological community where light, sound, technological media, and layered environments intertwine.
The four resident artists in this exhibition bring diverse backgrounds in painting, stage design, video installations, and cross-disciplinary multimedia. Unconstrained by conventional consensus, they create from pure intuition and sensory perception.

Exhibition & Creation
