Previous Residency Exhibitions:「Dialogue」
2024-10-09 654We are honored to announce the opening of the first exhibition under the ART FLOW Youth Artist Residency Program, 「Dialogue: A Dual Exhibition by Li Suitang and Zai Pengfei」, on October 15 at the TAI Art Center.
This exhibition showcases the works of two resident artists, whose styles, themes, and mediums differ greatly. Yet, over three months of residency and daily exchanges, their creations have forged connections and dialogues that reflect serenity and introspection. Although their paths differ, their works reveal a unique resonance and common ground.
As Zhuangzi said, “In an empty room, clarity arises, and auspiciousness resides,” the “white” in the exhibition title extends the Chinese philosophical concept of "leaving blank space." Just as the soul needs its blank spaces, so too does life—a reflection of wisdom. *Dialogue* represents mutual exchange: a dialogue with the self and a response to the realities of the world.
Zai Pengfei’s abstract and minimalist works, such as *Tinnitus*, embody his personal reflections and self-expression. At the same time, the exhibition invites viewers to complete their own dialogues with the pieces, fostering shared empathy and engagement. Li Suitang’s fragmented visual narratives piece together his observations of the surrounding world. During his residency, Li recorded contemporary "dialogues," focusing on fundamental questions: How should we live? How do we reclaim agency over our lives?

During his three-month residency, Li Suitang used photography to document countless moments from the lives of those around him. Adopting the perspective of an observer and exploring different roles, he fragmented and reframed his subjects. His work oscillates between quiet and lively scenes, weaving together a tapestry of daily life composed of diverse landscapes and characters.

Li Suitang: "How should we live? This is the only question that concerns me, and my focus has always been singular: to become the master of life. In this series, I observe the lives of Shanghai residents from the perspective of a bystander, primarily using images and videos of daily life. By slicing through different roles and moments, the work resembles evidence rather than a narrative description.

Zai Pengfei is an artist who excels in expressing himself through the most unadorned and minimalist forms of art. In his works, vivid and vibrant colors are stripped away, replaced by simple black and white tones intricately layered to create depth and texture.
The *Motion Sickness Pills* series, a hallmark of Zai Pengfei’s work, embodies both his inner world and a diary of everyday life. It captures fleeting moments of inspiration born from repeated “battles between the body and consciousness.” Without a fixed purpose or endpoint, the series focuses on distilling the repetitive nature of daily life into simplicity. By doing so, Zai encourages viewers to notice the subtle transformations hidden in the monotony of routine.

Zai Pengfei: “Recently, I’ve been experiencing tinnitus, with a persistent noise like a cotton thread rubbing back and forth against my eardrum. As a result, some of my works during this residency incorporate sound while retaining the charcoal and ink in black and gray, along with the red net and white force. I need repetition, precision, and obsessive processes—more to meet physical needs than to express myself. This process feels like a massage for the body, relaxing my strained eardrums and soothing my aching brain. It’s just about finding some comfort for myself.
